| Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Sometimes called Freedom Day, it is celebrated on June 19, the anniversary of the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas – 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. |
