June 25 – 9 am – 4 pm

At St. Mary’s College of Maryland in conjunction with Historic St. Mary’s City

Free with lunch included

The Institute features:

  • Hands on experience with the website – https://www.equityinhistory.org/ – which provides in-depth searchable access to the history of Black, Indigenous, and Other People of Color across Southern Maryland.  The website is geared to MSDE teaching standards.

  • Learning about Southern Maryland history from St. Mary’s College of Maryland historian and archaeologist Dr. Julie King. Specific information provided on Historic St. Mary’s City.

  • An Expo of local institutions providing a wealth of information on the history and opportunities for field trips and classroom presentations.

  • Attendees receiving MSDE credit for attending the Institute, completing an online session on culturally appropriate teaching, and preparing a lesson plan.

Surveys of the teachers after the 2024 Summer Institutes indicated the following:

  • Teachers really appreciated the Institute. Their understanding of Southern Maryland History was greatly increased by the content presented at the Institute.   As a result of the Institute, they felt well equipped to use the website and its extensive resources and are now using the website in their classrooms.  Register for the Institute here:
